66 seats have the oval seat support and the rubber stop bumper that looks like a small rubber shoe. They also have only one latch, with the latch mounted on the passenger side, and the latch guide is plastic.

Of note about 66 fastbacks is that 100% of them, yes, every one, came with a fold down seat as a standard option.  If you are working on a 66 fastback without a fold down seat, you can blame a previous owner for selling or discarding this option, because your car did originally come with it.  If you are working on a later year Mustang, chances are somebody is trying to sell you 66 fold down parts because they are much more prolific than the later year seats.

Because all of the 66 fastbacks came with a fold down seat, all of the interior panels are the same, ie, there are no 66 fiberglass interior trim panels out there that will not work with your fold down seat.  Also, the trap door is the same for 65 and 66.

Identifying features

All of these pictures are thumb-nailed so that you can see the full resolution picture if you so choose.


66 with oval shaped seat support. This seat support will be the same from 66-70.


Stop bumper used starting in 66.  If this part is still on the seat, it is an eye catcher to distinguish the seat from a 65 style seat.



This is the 66 latch, located on the passenger side with a black plastic latch guide, and this particular feature is identical to 1965.


For comparison, here is the 65-66 style trim (top) compared to 67-68 style trim (middle) and 69-70 style trim (bottom).  Side by side the difference is very distinct if you know what to look for.

The two hinges on the left are for 65-66, the hinge on the right is for 67-70.  They have slightly different profiles, but easiest identifying feature is that 65-66 has all elongated bolt holes, 67-70 has round bolt holes where it attaches to the trap door.

  Now that we know that all 66 fastbacks came with these, and we know the easily identifiable external features, lets take a look at what they look like underneath.  For many EBay listings or swap meets, you will find these panels disassembled with no carpet and no trim.   

Hole is the 5/16-18 nut welded inside the frame for the stop bumper.


Close up of holes you would have to cut to use a 65 rear panel in 66-70. Notice that if you made this mod there would be no visible evidence that it had previously been a 65 panel once the carpet and oval plate is installed.
